On July 24, 1978, a boy was born. A boy who would grow up to become a legend. Andy Irons ment so much to the surfing world that his loss leaves an incomprehensible void behind. On Nov. 2nd 2010, Andy broke all of our hearts, when his stopped beating. I remember showing up at my office in the biology department of a university in denmark, getting on with my morning ritual; a cup of coffee and a look at www.surfermag.com to see what had been going on. Then I remember seeing the "RIP Andy Irons" banner on the top of the page and I felt cold. Because it couldn't be true. But it was.
Andy Irons surfing was the most alive anyone has ever been. It was raw, powerful and passionate. It was why people all over the world would stop their busy lives and pay attention for a while, while Andy was in the water.
There will never be another Andy Irons. But I sincerely hope that any and all surfer out there, from the youngest grom to oldest most hardcore soulsurfer, will take a page from the A.I book and surf with more heart and fire than possible and with a style larger than life.
This video was made by Matt Beauchesne for the SURFER POLL 2010 and it is nothing short of a masterpiece. All credits to M.B.
